ARTIFICIAL DISCO

This is a project I started back in 2020 during covid lockdowns. Originally the idea was to see if I could use my computer to realize some of my compositions, which I would usually be trying to get played by a band.

It also made sense since I listened to a lot of electronic music in my teens. My favorites where artists such as Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Orbital and Propellerheads. So with those inspirations in mind I got myself a new hobby during covid. I bought an MPC1000, a couple of desktop synthesizers and got to work.

Digital Desperation

The first product of this new obsession got the title Digital Desperation.

Look At That!

The second album I made is called "Look at That!" and was created as a "Record Production Month" challenge. This required an album to be finished in a single month. These tracks therefore have a raw, sort of improvisation quality to them.

It's not the way I like to work usually, but an interesting challenge nevertheless. I suppose this is good practice also if I ever find myself composing or producing under a deadline. I am proud of the music, though, and would like to revisit some of it. This is also much more "techno" than the rest of my stuff, realying very heavily on synth sounds, with no trumpet playing on it.

Not Quite Right

Third album. "Not Quite Right", is basically one long expermiment in the Amen Break, and is probably the closest to that elusive label of IDM I've gotten so far. Over-all it's also pretty jazzy, with a lot of trumpet playing on it.

Is This For Real?

Fourth album is called "Is This For Real?" based off a sample used in the first track. I sampled a bunch of get-rich-quick youtube videos and put those in there. The result is pretty funny, in my own humble opinion. The album is generally more funky in style than my previous efforts. "Disco Schnitzel" is even kind of danceable.

Slow Motion Psychedelics

Slow Motion Psychedelics is an experiment in lofi hip hop. This is a style of music that has been very popular recently. It often uses samples from jazz records, so it's very jazzy by nature. I also see some similarities with the cool jazz of the 50's, at least in spirit. My idea was to try to write music in this style without using samples as a source material - well mostly anyway. Some drum samples went into creating this, and some one-shot bass samples and similar. It features even more trumpet plyaing than usual.

A little bonus for anyone who read this far. My latest album, lurking on Soundcloud, slowly getting ready.
